Master director David Lean has made a handful of motion pictures that could be considered masterpieces. "Brief Encounter", Great Expectations", "Oliver Twist", The Bridge on The River Kwai" and "Lawrence of Arabia" are on many serious film critics' lists of all time great films. "Doctor Zhivago" (1965) has its admirers but few highbrow film critics acknowledge it as a movie milestone.
Nevertheless, it is a film that has endured for the past 4 decades. The glamorous romantic leads (Omar Sharif and Julie Christie) will forever be remembered as Yuri and Lara. The cinematography, sets, costumes and music score are perfection. Technically the movie is a marvel. It may be soap opera on the tundra but it is an unforgettable film epic, brilliantly directed by Mr. Lean.
