Comments: Jack L. Warner's spectacular Technicolor production of Broadway's famed My Fair Lady is a lavish, carefully produced recreation of the stage musical, perhaps a bit too lavish and careful. Viewed on the big 70 mm screen in its original Road Show release back in 1964, the movie was a huge hit with audiences. Audrey Hepburn was the fairest of ladies, even though she had a time of it trying to convince as the "guttersnipe" flower girl Eliza Doolittle. Rex Harrison charmed the pants off critics and audiences alike with his brilliant phonetics expert Henry Higgins. I don't begrudge the 8 Oscars (including Best Picture) it received but in retrospect I think Disney's Mary Poppins should have won the big prize that year.
